African lions are the face of large predators for the rest of the world. But no matter how big and strong they are, their lives are threatened – unexpectedly – by loss of habitat and poaching.
The story of how Sirga met Val is instructive.
Sirga’s parents were caught feeding cattle and she was born in the camp while her parents were being held there.
When it comes to lion cubs, there is practically no such thing as an “only baby”.
There are always at least 2 in litters, and Sirga did have siblings. No longer, however, as her siblings appear to have been killed by other lions in that camp.
Sirga was the only surviving baby, and her mother also refused to feed her.
It was then that Gruener saved her, for which she is grateful to this day.
