Unlocking the Secrets of the Amazon: Groundbreaking Findings on Mico Schneider Monkeys

New and endangered species of monkeys discovered in Brazil.đŸ§đŸ€—

A group of scientists has discovered a new species of broad-nosed monkeys from the monkey family in the Amazon. This primate was named Mico Schneider in honor of the Brazilian professor Horatio Schneider, who has done many studies on the diversity and evolution of monkeys.

The family of marmoset, numbering more than a dozen species, primarily inhabits the endangered forests of the Amazon. Unfortunately, at present, there are no specific measures to protect the habitat of these rare animals.

During their research, scientists went to the jungle on foot and by canoe. To track the response of the monkeys, they imitated the sounds of monkeys. With permission from the Chico Mendez Biodiversity Conservation Institute and following established protocols, they collected 598 skin samples. These specimens covered every known species of Mico monkey, as well as the tiny marmoset known as Callibella.

Through extensive analysis, including DNA, the researchers not only created a detailed map of the distribution of monkeys but also identified a previously unknown species. The Schneider marmoset stood out because it was different in coat color, and overall size.

The Amazon is home for various primates with a total of 146 species. It features the highest diversity of primates in the world. Efforts to study and protect other endangered native fauna in the region are continuing consistently.
