Revealing the Hidden Population: Surprising Discovery of Spectacled Bears in Peru

The limited habitat of the spectacled bears🧐đŸ„ș

A recent study in Peru has shown that the country is home to more spectacled bears than previously thought. Initially, the biologists began the expedition in search of the rare yellow-tailed monkey, an endemic species in the forests of the region.

Locals claim that they often meet bears in that area, and push them to study the spectacled bears.

The spectacled bear is known for its antisocial behavior. It was mistakenly believed that it was a nocturnal animal because it avoided human contact. It is the only species in South America and plays a very important role as an “umbrella species” as they protect other animals in the ecosystem.

Alas, the spectacled bears as considered to be vulnerable as they are poached. As the research shows, every bear is identified by special face markings. There are estimations of their quantity. They have a density of 10 bears per 100km, which is more than twice the last estimates.

It should be noted that this study was conducted in a limited area, and may not represent the real image of their habitat. Yet, the bears’ observation has consequences for their conservation, denoting that they need larger habitats.
