Albinism is not an incredibly rare case in wildlife, but it presents a significant challenge to the survival of these animals in their natural habitats. They are mostly ignored by their relatives and become more vulnerable to predators.
Albinism is especially dangerous for alligators because of additional factors. Many of them have misshapen jaws and their light-colored skin is incongruous with their environment.
Wild Florida is an outstanding destination where dedicated staff works tirelessly to care for these unique creatures. In May 2017, the park acquired a male-female albino alligator pair named Blizzard and Snow White. This marked the first breeding pair of albino alligators in Central Florida, making it one of the few places in the world where visitors can view these rare species.
At the time Blizzard was acquired, the man was 12 years old and his female companion, Snowflake, was 23. Blizzard is larger in size, and both have a light color not only in their bodies but also in their eyes. resembling drops of milk. Snowflake’s right eye is opaque white, and his left eye has two red spots.
The park created ideal conditions for Blizzard and Snowflake, which facilitated successful reproduction without any problems. While most of their offspring are usually normal, in 2019 one of the children inherited their parents’ albino trait. This year, the situation was repeated: two of the 18 newborns were albino children.
Currently, all newborns, including ”special” albinos, receive complex care and live in separate terrariums with comfortable climatic conditions.
It should be noted that white alligators can exhibit conditions other than albinism, such as leukemia.
