Like many other wild animals, African elephants also suffer from poaching. These huge animals are killed for their tusks, leaving behind many helpless orphaned young. Fortunately, some of these abandoned elephants can be saved. The Nairobi Elephant Orphanage in Kenya is a place where abandoned baby elephants stay and get support.
Lovely orphaned elephants are cared for by a dedicated group of conservationists here. For a calf that has lost its parents, life is very unfair.
The compassion and dedication of the shelter’s volunteers help them survive.
Dame Daphne Sheldrick is one of them. In fact, she was the one who made it possible because she dedicated her life to saving animals.
This woman has given hundreds of animals a second chance at life. All these years, she successfully raised newborns. Their team has already managed to return numerous elephants to wildlife during more than 40 years of work.
Through her enthusiasm, Dame Daphne Sheldrick has developed the perfect milk formula, which is very similar to the milk of an elephant. She says the orphaned elephants inspired her to do pioneering conservation work at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
From elephants, she learned to get rid of bad experiences and move on. The author says that ”Knowing the horrors that elephants go through and how they deal with it has made me stronger.”
And the elephants she saved repay her kindness in a very lovely way.
