The actress, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the spring of 2021, has hinted that her long career as an actress may be coming to an end.
«Right now, I can’t imagine getting up at 5 am and working on set from 12 to 2 pm», Applegate told the Los Angeles Times on Feb. 7. «I don’t have that in me right now».
In January, Applegate was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for her portrayal of Jan Harding in the third and final season of Netflix’s Dead to Me, and she hinted that the Feb. 26 ceremony could be the symbolic final chapter.
«This is probably my last awards show as an actor», Applegate explained, «so it’s a big deal».
However, the Married… with Children alum has no plans to leave the entertainment industry entirely. Applegate, who has a 12-year-old daughter with husband Martyn LeNoble, says she sees herself «doing voice work to earn some money to make sure my daughter is fed and we’re at home».
When it came to the final season of Dead to Me, which starred Linda Cardellini as Jen’s best friend Judy Hale, Applegate had a hard time watching the episodes after they became available on Netflix in November 2022.
«I don’t like to see myself suffering», she admitted. «I gained 40 pounds from inactivity and medication, and I didn’t look or feel like myself».
Eventually, she was able to sit down and enjoy the end of the show.
«At some point, I was able to distance myself from my ego and realize what a beautiful TV piece this is», said the 51-year-old. «Everything I wasn’t in was so much fun to see and experience for the first time».
As Applegate explained, filming the final episodes of Dead to Me was the opposite of what happened in real life between her and Cardellini.
«She literally took me under her wing and protected and cared for me every day», Applegate said. «The tables have changed. Jen takes care of her dying friend and Linda took care of me when I said goodbye to someone I’ve always known, so a part of me was dying».
All three seasons of Dead to Me are available to watch on Netflix.
